Grave Charlotte Dyall

 

Grave in the town cemetery of Charlotte Dyall who died aged 60 in September 1922.

Probate records show she left a will with Eliza Ann Dyall the main person mentioned in it. Lee grave, Great Marlow

Elizabeth Lee, wife of James Lee Jan 17 18(5?)7 aged LIV years.

And James Lee died Mar 18th 1864 age 73.

Grave located All Saints, Parish Church.

George Cole, Great Marlow

Grave reads:

George Cole died Apr 18 1834 aged LXIV years (64!)

And wife Mary who died Feb 19th 1817 age ?? years

Grave mentions that George was late of Royal.....but Royal what can't be made out!

Research Notes:

The "Royal..." Was  referring either to his time in the Royal Artillery or his time at the Royal Military College at Remnantz West Street where he was a Sergeant instructor to the cadets. To find out more about life for the cadets there please read this post. After the College moved from Marlow in 1812 George set up a  private day school for boys where Liston Hall is today in Chapel Street. He was a fervent Wesleyan so perhaps would have been pleased to know that the site of his home and school became a Primitive Methodist chapel after his death (before becoming Liston Hall). In fact George was credited with actually starting Methodism in Marlow by persuading the preacher who visited Henley every week to make a stop at Marlow too. Early meetings were held in an unglamorous location- under a tree by the "Common Slough" which was at the junctions of Spittal, Chapel and Dean streets in Marlow.

Fullicks Grave and Research, Great Marlow

 

 

Running around the top and sides is the message "In Loving Remembrance For Ever"

Mary Ann Fullicks beloved wife of J R Fullicks d. Mar 29 1878 age 38 years.

James Richard Fullicks d Easter Eve 1899 Aged 75 years

Research By Charlotte:

Mary Anne was nee Bird.

James Richard was the last of the Fullicks family in Marlow. He started his working life at Morgan's the drapers in Market Square. He then worked at other drapers. Later he moved with Mary Ann to Windsor but returned to Marlow as a widower. He died after contracting flu.

The couple had no children, or at least none that survived infancy.

Nash Grave, All Saints Parish Church Marlow

Partial Grave - reads: Thomas Nash, Gent, son of the above (above part not attached) who died 17 June 1816 age 17 years.  Stone is lying on side against church wall of the Marlow parish church 2022.

Wiggington Graves and Research, Great Marlow

 

The grave of George the son of William and Mary Ann Wiggington of this town who "entered into rest" Feb 23rd 1880 aged 27 "With Christ Is Better".

Also commemorated on the grave is his sister Mary Ann who it says died at Brighton and is buried there. Died January 10th 1901. "Until The Day Dawns"

Maryann Wiggington. Beloved wife of William Wiggington. Born April 10th 1813 and died December 13th 1865

William Wiggington husband of the above who died suddenly Sept 19th 1879 age 60.

Research by Charlotte:

William and Mary Ann (the parents)

William was a retired bargeman. He dropped dead in his garden. He had previously survived surgery in London for cancer of the tongue. Mary Ann kept a grocery and tobacconist's shop in Dean Street Marlow. This was the property of her father James Lee. The spiteful and gested political atmosphere of Victorian Marlow saw Mary Ann targeted because of her father's political allegiances. You can read more about this in our post here.

Mary died after a long period of illness that involved her heart, lungs and liver. The doctor who treated her in her final illness, Dr Oliver, was accused by her husband, two teenage daughters Mary Ann junior (18) and Emma (15) and another doctor of malpractice, treating her when incapable to do so because he was obviously intoxicated. William threw him out of their home. Mary herself believed the last medicine she took was making her worse. An inquest found that Dr Oliver had made no mistakes as to treatment despite his possible drunkenness at time and that Mary was so ill that her death was not exceptional. An autopsy ruled out there being any poisonous ingredients in the medicines Dr Oliver gave her. One of the ingredients used would however burn the throat when swallowed.

The fact that he had declared her to be getting better when she no longer had a pulse makes the idea he was fully competent when he attended her questionable!

Mary Ann's cause of death was given as heart disease. She also had a diseased liver.

This couple were Wesleyans. There was no burial ground at that time for the Wesleyan community or a town cemetery hence their burial at the parish church.

Mary Ann (the daughter). Born 1848.

Worked as a keeper of a lodging house for a while.

Ellis Grave and Research Bisham

 This grave is at All Saints, Bisham. 

In loving memory of Mary the beloved wife of Arthur John Ellis. Entered into rest September 17 1913 aged 37 years.

Also to Ethel Alice Ellis. I couldn't read the line that followed her name. But see notes below:

Notes by Charlotte:

Mary was nee Currell.

Ethel Alice was the daughter of Mary and Arthur. She was aged 1 on the 1901 census and was a schoolgirl in 1911.

Arthur John Ellis of Bisham nephew of the above Arthur John Ellis died in France in 1930 after falling into a waterfall at the Gorges de Loup. He was one of a party of sailors from the Royal Navy ship Revenge having a day out together. He was 21 at the time and climbed onto some railings so that his friends could get a dramatic picture of him to send to his sweetheart in London. Unfortunately he overbalanced and fell in.

Arthur John Ellis senior, husband of the Mary on the grave was a Bisham special constable, a carpenter and a wheelwright. The 1911 census states he worked in the capacity of carpenter at a paper mill. This may have been at Marlow.

Grave and Research For Eliza Holford and Thomas Holford Great Marlow

 In loving memory of Eliza the dearly beloved wife of Thomas Holford died Dec 21st 1885.

Also Thomas Holford husband of the above died Jan 1902*

*The body of Thomas was found floating in the Thames at Marlow Weir some time after he was last seen alive. It appeared the body had been in the water for a length of time. Thomas had left his home in Crown Lane one evening on the express mission to consult a doctor. He walked through the town before entering Marlow bridge which puzzled a watching relative as it took him away from the direction of any doctors. Thomas was not seen alive again. His cap was found a few days later in a meadow near Marlow Lock.  Robbery was ruled out as his pockets contained money and his watch. The coroner's verdict was "found drowned". The grave gives no exact date of death for Thomas as it was not known exactly when he entered the water.

He worked for more than 20 years at Wethered's brewery as spirit taster or cellar foreman. He was "much respected" by employees and colleagues alike. The inquest was held at The Two Brewers, in St Peters Street. 

Thomas was married twice, and came to Marlow from Oxford according to his obituary.

Walker grave, Great Marlow

 This grave is in All Saints Parish Church. 

William Walker, son of William and Patience Walker of this parish. D. 28 Oct 1826. Age 18. 

ALSO OF

William Walker died 21 June 1845 age 75

And:

Patience Walker, relict of the above (widow) Died at Tottenham 26 (May?)18?4. Age 76. 

Notes from Charlotte:

William was a broker. He and Patience lived West Street from at least 1833 - 1845. See his property description on the 1833 parochial assessment here.

Kempster Grave, Marlow

 

Grave of Annie Kempster died November 18th 1916 age 52 "Mother"

And William John Kempster who died January 1940 age 75. 

Notes by Charlotte:

William ran a bakery and confectionary shop in the High Street with an additional branch in West Street. Annie was his wife. Her maiden name was Arnold. Her sister Mary lived with the couple in 1911 as a shop assistant.

Grave of William Niven, All Saints Marlow

 Architect William lived at the impressive Marlow Place in Station Road and died in 1921 age 75. He was passionately interested in the history of the house and the story of Marlow in general. You can read more about Marlow Place here

Touching Gosling Grave, Marlow Cemetery

 Harry Gosling, 17 Apr 1954 "Finally reunited"  Small stone added to his wife's grave later.

"In loving memory of Louise Gosling beloved wife of Harry Gosling" died March 3 March 1926 age 46. 

"If love could have saved her, she would not have died" 

These are commemorated on the same grave in Marlow Cemetery.

Research notes by Charlotte:

Louise's census entries indicate a Marlow birth for her but her husband was originally from Truro, Cornwall. He was a painter in the coach building trade at Marlow by 1911. Louise worked as a dressmaker before marriage to Harry at Bisham in 1906. She was the daughter of Louisa and Thomas Jordan. Thomas was the gardener for the house Bohemia across the river at Bisham.
