Landlords and History of The Coach and Horses, West Street

*This post is updated with new information as it becomes available*

1783 - Edward Neighbour.

1785 - Edward Neighbour. The pub was then owned by Richard Ray, brewer of Cookham.

1787 - Edward Neighbour (died this year) Wife Lydia. He left all his stock of liquors and all else he possessed to Lydia who was the sole executor of his will.

1823 - John Pierce

1832,33 - John Pierce/Pearce

1844 - Thomas Wootten

1847 - William Sawyer.

1848 - William Sawyer is replaced by John Stevenson. William went to the Ship also in West Street. See here. He was the son of James and Charlotte Sawyer, bakers of West Street. See here for more on them and his brother.

1852 - John Stephenson  (see also The White Lion). Was a brewer with his wife Catherine in Hayes Place off West Street in 1851. This is odd as by law if he had the license for the Coach and Horses in 1851 he should have lived on the premises not elsewhere. Perhaps he only owned the pub and was not the licensed though that is implied in sources. Moved to the White Lion West Street 1853.

1853 - Charles Haines (also a  boot and shoe maker)

1854 - Charles Haines

1859 - H Stroud

1861- Henry Stroud born circa 1800. Also mentioned as a builder 1861. May have moved to the Coach and Horses from a pub in Dean Street. Went bankrupt following illness as had been unable to work. Moved to Cookham Dean in 1866. Also a builder and bricklayer then.

1869 - Henry Stroud. Is he back after bankruptcy or is it a family member?

1872 - Thomas Hall. Fined £1 plus costs for assaulting a man in West Street. Moved from the Clayton Arms pub in Oxford Road. More on him at that pub here.

1874 - Mr Hall "One of the most ancient of old Marlow Taverns"

1875 - George Bowles. George had first applied for the licence the previous year but the granting of the transfer was delayed as he had misfiled the paperwork! Has some currently popular bagatelle boards available for customers use.

1877 - George Bowles

1881 - James Watkins (Born Surrey) (probably took over 1878)

1883 - Listed as Coach And Horses Inn

1891 - James Watkins

1893 - James Watkins dies at the Inn aged 71.

1899 - Henry James Watkins, son of above.

1902 - HJ Watkins died 1902 age 49 of consumption. (Second source gives initials as TW but this is incorrect, third gives it as JH!)

1903 -  Miss Elizabeth Bourne takes over.

1907 - Elizabeth Richardson

1911 - William Thomas Richardson

1915 - Thomas William Richardson qv, 2. Thomas William "Robson"

1920 - Mrs Elizabeth Richardson

1928 - Mrs Elizabeth Richardson

Notes - If you are looking for a particular surname, be sure to check it for entries under all public houses, beer houses, inns, common lodging houses and hotels listed here because landlords in Marlow did sometimes play musical chairs and end up presiding over more than one premises. Names and addresses are listed as they read in original records, even if this differs from the usual. This can help understand common misspellings which may be used to find people and places in other sources where the mistake has been duplicated.

NB There was also a beer house called the Coach and Houses at Bovingdon Green, described as newly built in 1836.
