Above are the premises of George Smith Pearce who ran a combined hairdressing, stationery, book lending and printing business in Great Marlow High Street.
George was baptised at Aylesbury in 1817 to Elizabeth and John Pearce. He married Adelaide Hoar in Oxfordshire in 1837.
George and Adelaide arrived in Spittal Street Marlow by 1839 and he set up as a hairdresser and gaiter maker. They appear on the 1841 census in Spittal Street with George. At that time, before the arrival of the Pearce family there, the premises photographed above were occupied by a tailor and before that it was a hairdressers ran by William Chamberlain.
In 1847 George is also listed as a bookseller but was still in Spittal Street.
By 1851 George Pearce had moved in to this High Street building. He and Adelaide last appear on the census in the town in 1861. Adelaide died in 1863, George in 1868.
The premises were taken over by Robert Hayes Smith who was a bookseller and stationer, of whom more in future.
